Medication Dependence Prevention Month raises awareness about preventing medication harms and finding community support.
At the moment in Australia, more people are dying from prescription pain and sedative medications than are dying in traffic accidents. Over use, or using a medication for too long can lead to medication tolerance, dependence and addiction. It can also make the pain worse and increase insomnia.
Medication Dependence Prevention Month seeks to prevent this health crisis by encouraging people with long-term pain or insomnia issues to make a plan mapping out how and when to safely stop using these medications with their health professional.
